Scott Greeson, singer/songwriter and entertainer is my guest on Episode 13 of Heartsong Fit With Vickie Maris. He is also my husband, so that makes him an extra special guest!
Scott has been helping me with the podcast behind the scenes. He's an expert with the recording equipment and use of the software, ProTools, that we use in our music studio.
In this episode, we share insights from behind the scenes of several of our music gigs and recording projects.
Scott shares the reasons for his fondness of the tune, Heart of Gold, by Neil Young, and why he chose to sing it during a Celebration of Life service. He tells a story of his late wife, Janet Greeson, and the role she played in his learning to play harmonica.
We also share news of the release of Lee Anna Atwell's new cd project, Burning Heart, which was recorded here in our studio, Hoosier Surf Records. Her amazing songwriting talent, along with her beautiful vocals and keyboard playing, are all showcased on this disc. (in the links below)
You'll hear us banter about the band, Scott Greeson and Trouble With Monday, and our recent Christmas concert.
We tell a special story about how the pieces of my latest project, Stories of a Stateside Bride, came together on a Friday night with a bit of divine intervention.
We wrap this episode with a live recording of one of Scott's tunes, Roadside Lullaby, which we played at the Eye Opener Cafe on Dec. 20 during a Christmas gig.

Whether you're an experienced horseman or still dreaming of owning a pony, you're going to enjoy taking a ride through the llama pasture during Episode 12. I put my Edirol recorder in my vest pocket so you can hear the footsteps of my Connemara horse, Kerrymor Madison, the creaks of the saddle, the sneezes of the llamas and other ambient sounds of the ride.
This episode is specifically designed to help you relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment. If you're not currently giving yourself time to de-stress each day, I hope this ride on Madison plants a seed for something you could begin doing in your journey of self care.
I also recap a keynote presentation given by John Medina during the International Online Learning Conference. He is the author of Brain Rules and several other interesting books about how our brains work and how we learn. He tells us that the research suggests at least 30 minutes of exercising to get your heart rate elevated on a daily basis is you want to stave off memory loss and keep your mind sharp.

This episode starts with a story about one of my protective mama llamas, Velvet, who is still looking out for her daughter, Petals, who has long since grown into an adult llama. As I tell the story, my Connemara pony, Madison, interrupts and tries to get the attention on himself.
The bulk of the content in this episode is an interview with the owners of Fox Lake Resort, Edwin and Sheryl Olson, in Marcell, Minnesota - USA. They share the history of the resort - original structures built completely by hand without electricity by two Frenchmen in the 1930s - and the many ways people enjoy the property for fishing and nature vacations. You'll hear the sounds of a fishing line being cast from the boat during an outing to fish for large mouth bass and northern pike, as well as an eagle chirping from the bank of the lake.
You can see photos on the website, http://www.heartsongfit.com/10 and also see a video of me with my horse, Madison and my llama, Betty, as we introduce the episode. Enjoy!

This episode is a conversation between me and Linda Brammer about the 21-day gentle cleanse Ultimate Reset. We walk listeners through their experiences doing a 21-day cleanse. We step through the Program Guide and share several tips learned along the way. You'll hear about the benefits gained from the change in eating habits and addition of the supplements during the 21 days. We both experienced weight loss and were feeling much better at the end of the experience.
We also talk about several of the recipes used during the cleanse. By Week 2 of the program, we were eating vegetarian and vegan meals.
If you'd like to learn more, I kept a journal during the Reset, which appears in my blog. I was active as a Beachbody coach at the time of the recording. http://www.heartsongfit.com

Hiking along the trails on the farm is one way that Vickie finds relief from stress after a busy day. She often takes one of the llamas with her for walking on the trails. They both benefit from walking for exercise, and at the same time enjoy each other’s company on the trail.
Vickie teaches you about llamas along the journey and describes the elements of nature that they encounter during the walk. Listen to the llama hum, the creek rushing by, the Sycamore leaves crunching under foot and other sounds from the walk.
There is a Pinterest board that Vickie maintains at www.pinterest.com/heartsongfit about hiking with llamas for exercise. Repinning a pin from that board to your own Pinterest account would be a fun way to share this episode with others!

Have You Ever Had a Llama in Your House?
Would You Like to Hear a Farm Story?
You’ll get to learn a bit about life on the farm as Vickie describes her one-eyed llama, Stunning, whom Madison is so careful with as he moves around her. She describes the coloring of Primary Colors and how she sends the fleeces, sheared in the spring, to the mill for processing into rovings and yarn.
Vickie also shares a story about the harsh 2014 winter and the day she found Lily, the llama, shivering in the barn. Lily got to live in the old farm house for a few hours as she warmed up and enjoyed watching Let’s Make a Deal on the TV.

Did You Work Out Today?
From Vickie: “There are three things that really stand out to me in this program. 1) I love Shaun T. He is an amazing athlete and professional fitness trainer. He keeps me motivated, and, well, focused! I also love that these workouts are designed to be done five days a week and are only 25 minutes each. They fit in my day very well. And 3) the modifier who does a low-impact version of the moves has enabled me to do this difficult program and gradually work up to some of the full versions of the moves.
“My body has really been toning as I do this program, and the inches are melting from my waist line. Love it! If you’re doing this program or any workout routine, I encourage you to do what I do and keep track of your workouts online at Team Beachbody. I like to watch my workout calendar fill up in the month. I also keep track of my stats and track my progress in weight loss, inches lost, my decreasing blood pressure and more. You can set up a free account through my Beachbody website.” http://www.beachbodycoach.com/heartsongfit

My mom, Lucille Maris, shares her secrets to keeping fit and healthy at age 91 ½ years. Lucille talks about eating healthy from the time she grew up in the 1920s to her diet of meals she prepares in the kitchen of her condo today which are for a gluten-free diet.
Lucille talks about outdoor activities in the one-room school house she attended to moving on to the large high school, Urbana High, where she played sports from 1936 to 1940. She was a three-sport athlete: softball, volleyball and basketball (which women played as a half-court game at that time). In her sophomore year, she was captain of the girl’s softball team. She also discusses the PE (physical education) requirements of a high school student during that era of United States history.
In another section, Lucille talks about her switch to a gluten-free diet and what motivated her to start eating gluten-free. As an outstanding cook, she gives you ideas about how to make gluten-free cooking part of your life. Here is clarification about the grains that contain gluten and that you should avoid if eating gluten free:
wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). If you’d like to learn more about a gluten-free diet, you can visit the Healthy Lifestyle Newsletter from Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/gluten-free-diet/art-20048530
Lucille’s husband (my dad), Professor and Lt. Col. James R. Maris, was a pilot in WWII and flew B-24 bombers. He served the United States of America in active and reserve duty for more than 20 years. Lucille introduces the subject in this episode.
Future episodes contain short stories that Lucille tells about her life as a stateside bride during WWII. These are at the end of several upcoming episodes. Through her stories, you’ll feel how she dealt with the stresses of the time, and you’ll laugh and cry along with her as she recounts vivid memories of those days.
In this episode she talks about a one-room apartment she lived in with no kitchen privileges while Dad was on base. She also talks about sitting through a double-feature movie twice one day to pass the time while she had no communication with dad and was worried about his safety.
